How do Marjane's ideas of heroism and martyrdom develop and or change? In the beginning of the book Persepolis, Marjane is a young girl who has been informed about the values of the protestors relating to the revolution. Marjane's parents have taught her to be a rebel and fight for her beliefs. She feels that she is at a disadvantage for being small, and that she can not make an impact, because of this she becomes very competitive. We see this side of her on page 54 in the second box, when she is imagining telling her friends about how her father went to prison. She states, “they cut my dad's leg off, but he still did not confess!... so they cut off his arm as well.” This relates to heroism because it shows how she wants her family to be heros, and she wants to show her friends that her family has made an impact towards the revolution.
